چکیده

Following the discovery of X-ray absorption in a high velocity outflow from the bright quasar PG1211+143 we have searched for similar features in XMM-Newton archival data of a second (high accretion rate) quasar PG0844+349. Evidence is found for several faint absorption lines in both the EPIC and RGS spectra, whose most likely identification with resonance transitions in H-like Fe, S, and Ne implies an origin in highly ionised matter with an outflow velocity of order ∼0.2c. The line equivalent widths require a line-of-sight column density of NH∼4 × 10 cm, at an ionisation parameter of logξ∼3.7. Assuming a radial outflow being driven by radiation pressure from the inner accretion disc, as suggested previously for PG1211+143, the flow in PG0844+349 is also likely to be optically thick, in this case within ∼25 Schwarzschild radii. If confirmed by better data our analysis suggests that a high velocity, highly ionised outflow is likely to be a significant component in the mass and energy budgets of AGN accreting at or above the Eddington rate.

A high velocity ionised outflow and XUV photosphere in the narrow emission line quasar PG 1211 + 143

A high velocity ionised outflow and XUV photosphere in the narrow emission line quasar PG1211+143 ABSTRACT We report on the analysis of a ∼60 ksec XMM-Newton observation of the bright, narrow emission line quasar PG1211+143. Absorption lines are seen in both EPIC and RGS spectra corresponding to Hand He-like ions of Fe, S, Mg, Ne, O, N and C. The observed line energies indicate an ionised outfl...

A high velocity ionised outflow and soft X - ray photosphere in the narrow emission line quasar PG 1211 + 143

We report on the analysis of a ∼60 ksec XMM-Newton observation of the bright, narrow emission line quasar PG1211+143. Absorption lines are seen in both EPIC and RGS spectra corresponding to Hand He-like ions of Fe, S, Mg, Ne, O, N and C. The observed line energies indicate an ionised outflow velocity of 0.08–0.1c. The highest energy lines require a column density of N H ∼5 × 10 23 cm −2 , at an...

Is the X - ray spectrum of the narrow emission line QSO PG 1211 + 143 defined by its energetic outflow ?

An XMM-Newton observation of the bright QSO PG1211+143 in 2001 revealed a blue-shifted absorption line spectrum indicative of a high velocity radial outflow of highly ionised gas. Unless highly collimated, the outflow mass rate was shown to be comparable to the accretion rate, with mechanical energy a significant fraction of the bolometric luminosity. Analysis of the full XMM-Newton data set no...

Evidence for an outflow from the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051

New observations using narrow band imaging, long-slit spectroscopy and MERLIN observations of the nuclear region of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051 have been made. An edge brightened, triangular region of ionized gas extending 420 pc from the centre of the galaxy has been detected. Long-slit spectra of this ionised gas, taken at 1.5 from the core, show the [O iii] 5007-Å emission line to consist of...

A high - velocity narrow absorption line outflow in the quasar

We report on the discovery of a high-velocity narrow absorption line outflow in the redshift 2.3 quasar J212329.46 − 005052.9. Five distinct outflow systems are detected with velocity shifts from −9710 to −14 050 km s−1 and C IV λλ1548, 1551 linewidths of FWHM ≈ 62– 164 km s−1. This outflow is remarkable for having high speeds and a degree of ionization similar to broad absorption line (BAL) fl...
